On the Salto high plateau, between San Genesio Atesino and the Val Sarentino, a theme trail tells the story of wood and logging

"Avia - the Lumberjack Trail' is the name of this ten-kilometre journey of discovery from San Genesio Atesino to Mezzavia on the road into the Val Sarentino, taking you on the trail of the woodcutters. The route starts below the village centre of San Genesio and winds through the woods of the high plateau, passing nine interactive stations, two of which feature play areas.
We follow path no. 3A. It goes downhill into a plain, and then uphill again to reach the lovely little village of Avigna. It lies secluded at around 850 metres above sea level, high above the entrance to the Val Sarentino. A forest playground sits below the cluster of buildings comprising the church and kindergarten. Afterwards, path no. 31B continues to the village church.
We choose Avigna as the stop for our lunch break. Above the village, the Lumberjack Trail leads out along path no. 1A and goes constantly downhill to Mezzavia. Since the hike has already taken three and a half hours to get this far, returning by public transport is highly recommended.
We take bus no. 150, which stops in Mezzavia, and change to line no. 156 in Bolzano. After a journey of just under 50 minutes, we arrive back at the village of San Genesio Atesino.
