From mid-April to early May, spring transforms the alpine meadows of Meltina into a purple and white carpet of crocus blossoms

The Giogo di Meltina in the Sarentino Alps is a rewarding hike at any time of year. You can enjoy a snowshoe tour in winter, admire the golden-yellow larch trees in autumn, or explore the lush green mountain meadows in summer. However, the area is particularly well-known during the final weeks of April and the first days of May, when a vast number of flowers bloom on the pastures.
Starting from the Schermoos car park on the road that connects Meltina to San Genesio, we initially walk for about 100 metres towards San Genesio. There, the forest path to the Möltner Kaser Hut branches off. The rocky and somewhat unmaintained trail leads first to the Föhrer Pond before heading slightly uphill along path no. 4. The track then merges into a forestry road.
We follow the signpost for "Sattlerhütte" (marker K). Past the Sattler Hut, the route continues slightly uphill towards the quarry. We have already spotted a few alpine snowbells and crocus flowers along the trail by this point, but there are still many more to see. On a small hill along the path to the Möltner Kaser Hut, the E5 European long-distance path branches off to the right.
We follow this trail and reach an alpine meadow landscape at an altitude of 1,750 metres that is completely covered with blooming crocuses. This is a wonderful photo opportunity, with the mountains in the distance and awakening nature right at our feet! From the Giogo di Meltina (Möltner Joch), we follow paths no. 17A and 5. These lead us to the Fahrer farms and eventually bring us back to the Schermoos car park above Valas after a walk of nearly three hours.
