In the Val Senales valley in the north-west of Merano, there is a special skiing area, where you can ski from autumn until late spring. It attracts even national alpine skiing teams which prepare themselves for the coming winter season on the Val Senales Glacier. This skiing area on the border of South Tyrol and Austria offers 30 km of well-groomed slopes, among them also the newly inaugurated "Transhumanz" slope of medium difficulty as well as the easy "Hasen-Abfahrt" downhill run. The black Leo Gurschler training slope for slalom and giant slalom, however, gets his name from the local pioneer Leo Gurschler.
Snowboarders and freeskiers instead will enjoy the Val Senales Fun Park, while children can look forward to the "Tiroli's Kinderland" children's world with tepee. The Val Senales Ski and Snowboard School is on hand to assist children, advanced skiers and returnees on the slopes.
The Val Senales skiing area belongs to the ski carousel Ortler Skiarena. However, also other sports like snowshoeing, ski mountaineering and cross-country skiing - beneficial for body and soul - are offered in the valley. In 2019 the Val Senales Glacier was declared winning skiing area (up to 30 km of slopes) worldwide by the German ski portal skiresort.de.
