Hike from the Val di Nova to the Gsteierhof

This moderately difficult route proceeds uphill through a mixed forest to the Gsteierhof tavern and the intermediate station of the Merano 2000 Cable Car: The hike is especially beautiful in autumn

The parking space in the Val di Nova valley near the Merano 2000 valley station represents the starting point of this hike through the forest above Merano. We cross the main road to Avelengo and reach the local business park where we take the path no. 24 (Lenzeben). The first section follows the Via Vernaun towards the Scena Waalweg path. Soon afterwards the path branches off on the right and leads steeply uphill through the forest. At the junction with the asphalted forest path we choose the signpost no. 3 indicating "Gsteier". The old pavement can still be seen in the forest. At the time of our hike the leaves of the maple and beech trees are beautifully coloured.

The last km to the rest point follows an asphalt road and so we reach the Gsteierhof in the middle of a meadow. The ensemble is composed of the tavern, the historic farmstead, a mill and a small but well equipped Peasant Museum which can be visited at any time. In case of fine weather you can enjoy a fantastic view on Merano and its surroundings.

Instead of heading back along the same route we descend to the intermediate station and turn back to the Val di Nova valley (Naiftal) by cable car. The route is not accessible for prams. If you want to walk to the Gsteierhof with a pram despite the altitude difference, you can reach the rest point on the asphalt road which runs parallel to the hiking path (no. 3 starting from the village of Scena) and turn back along the same route.
