Hike from Tirolo to Velloi

From the vineyards near Tirolo Castle, this hike takes us through the forest up to the mountain village of Velloi

On this small tour, which starts in the centre of Tirolo (Dorf Tirol, in German), we experience different landscapes of the Burgraviato. First we follow the road to Tirolo Castle. The trail no. 26 then leads us to the Schneeweisshof, passing the Weissgütl snack station, always heading west. Then the ascent through the forest starts. Always following the trail no. 26, the path climbs up to the valley of the Grabbach brook. From here it is only a short way to Velloi (Vellau).

The mountain village of Velloi is located at about 950 m a.s.l. and offers a fantastic view on the Val d'Adige valley towards south as well as on the Val Venosta valley. Three inns are available for lunch break: Vellauerhof, Oberlechner and Ladurner. Later on we return to Tirolo along the same route.

Alternatively, there is a chairlift and bus connection to Lagundo (Algund), from where you can return to Tirolo via Merano. The area around Velloi is particularly popular in autumn, when it is time again for the grape and chestnut harvest. When the summer heat is gone, one is also happy about the warming sunbeams that fall on the south facing slopes.
