Hike to the Lafitz Mountain Hut

An easy walking tour leads us via the Passo di Vizze (Pfitscher Joch) to the back Zillertal in Austria: A gorgeous mountain panorama at the main chain of the Alps is guaranteed.

Our starting point today is the last parking space at the road to the Passo di Vizze (1,800 m asl.). The road crosses the Val di Vizze until the location Stein, there it turns into a gravel road which curves up the hill. At the last parking space, shortly before the barrier, we leave our car and follow the marker no. 3 which first proceeds a bit downhill and then uphill on the left. At a higher altitude the path leads into the marker no. 7A, which we follow uphill on the gravel road.

This path leads us to the Passo di Vizze, at the beginning through the forest. At the first curve we reach the timber line and we walk through the high alpine area of meadows and rocks further up. The view is amazing, the Val di Vizze in the southwest, by contrast to the icy glacier world of the Cima Grava (Hochferner) and Gran Pilastro (Hochfeiler) in the east. The blooming vegetation along the path attracts butterflies. After about 90 minutes walk we reach the Vizze Pass at 2,248 m a.s.l.

In the lakes the surrounding mountains are reflected. We decide to walk 2 km further to the Zillertal and arrive at the Lafitz Mountain Hut. The Passo di Vizze is a state border and separates two totally incomparable landscapes. Its impressive how different rocks and vegetation can be, between the barren high valley and the southerly exposed hillside there is a sharp distinction.
