Spring hike to Verdignes

Searching for signs of spring on the sunny slopes of the Valle Isarco along a section of the South Tyrolean Chestnut Trail

The weeks between late March and early April, when the sun's rays grow stronger and the greenery gradually takes over, are a good time for a hike along a section of the South Tyrolean Chestnut Trail, locally known as the "Keschtnweg", between Velturno and Verdignes. We start in front of the tennis court and swimming pool in Velturno, where parking is available.

Crossing the Trumbichl opposite, a rocky hill covered in dry grassland, we walk towards the northern part of Velturno village until we reach Velturno Castle. The pasqueflower (pulsatilla) now blooms on the dry grasslands of the Trumbichl - this anemone, known for its dark purple colour, has become quite rare. At Velturno Castle, we join the "Keschtnweg".

Marked with the number 18, the trail heads southwest, taking us through the entire village and then through a landscape of meadows and forests to the Moar zu Viersch farm tavern. From there, we cross the Rio Pardello stream and head upwards on path no. 1 to Verdignes near Chiusa.

After visiting the small Romanesque Church of St. Valentine, we follow path no. 3 until we rejoin the South Tyrolean Chestnut Trail, which leads us back to Velturno. On this sunny April day, we can observe the awakening of nature as the warmth slowly returns.
