Hike along the Vadena Trail to Monticolo

Also in late autumn this easy circular walk through the deciduous forests near Monticolo leaves behind gorgeous impressions of nature and landscape in the south of South Tyrol.

The central position between the Valle dell’Adige valley and the Oltradige area cares also in winter for plenty of sunshine hours in the uplands between Vadena and Monticolo, well-known for its beautiful lakes. From the little parking space at the hamlet of Mover (Mairhof) near Vadena (Pfatten), we follow the path no. 5A known as Vadena Trail (Pfattnersteig). Past ancient walls the path proceeds steeply up the hill. Some clearings open up the view on the valley.

After a while we reach a chestnut grove. Here the South Tyrolean artist Sieglinde Tatz-Borgogno has realised a small memorial site dedicated to her mentors. The path turns into a forest road and becomes flatter. We reach the northern bank of the Big Monticolo Lake and turn to the right towards the Small Monticolo Lake. In autumnal quiet we are almost alone on the path. After we have rounded the small lake we walk on the western side further on to the Big Monticolo Lake.

In the south, beneath the parking space, we cross the path which proceeds through the reeds. On the trail no. 5 we come back into the valley again, straight to the village of Vadena. From there we have to walk several hundred metres along the road to the parking space at Mover, where our late autumnal circular tour ends.
