From Vilpiano to the slopes of the Monzoccolo: In autumn, sunny afternoons in the Valle dell’Adige are still pleasantly warm
Image gallery: Autumn hike to Planatsch
North of Vilpiano lies the valley station of the Vilpiano-Meltina Cable Car, where our late autumn hike begins. There is both a car park and a bus stop here. From this point, we walk through the village centre and cross the bridge over the Rio di Meltina stream.
Shortly afterwards, path no. 1B to Planatsch branches off to the left from the main road. The trail climbs steeply right away. We quickly gain 200 metres in elevation as we hike through the sparse autumn forest up to Planatsch. This sunny hamlet is characterised by fruit and wine growing.
We are now in a panoramic location above the Valle dell'Adige valley, at 500 metres above sea level. An asphalted road continues to the Scholhöfe farms. A suspension bridge takes us over the gorge of the Rio di Meltina - the Vilpiano Waterfall lies below. This natural monument is also accessible from Vilpiano in an easy 20-minute walk.
From the Scholhöfe farms, path no. 1 leads back down to the valley station of the cable car. We reach it after two hours of walking time. Late autumn is the ideal season for a traditional Toerggele stop, enjoying roasted chestnuts, apple juice, and "Susser", the local name for the sweet new wine.
