Under the refreshing light green canopy of budding beech leaves, this hike leads from Caldaro to Appiano

We start our spring hike on the Mendola Trail (Mendelsteig) in Sant'Antonio di Caldaro on the Wine Road. This district stretches towards the Castelvecchio forest and is home to the valley station of the Mendola Funicular. The "M" signpost guides us past the church.
First, we walk to the district of Pozzo. From here, the path climbs steeply towards the forest and passes Mühlburg Castle. The Mendola Path winds up to the Mendola Pass at an altitude of 1,363 metres. We do not plan to walk quite that far today. Instead, we have chosen the Zollwiese meadow, which lies at 1,000 metres above sea level, as the highest point of our route.
From there, we continue northwards at a comfortable pace along the Boos forest track. This path ends at Masaccio (Matschatsch) and meets the Mendola road (SS42). We walk uphill along the road for a short distance. After about 200 metres, we spot the junction for hiking trail no. 7 on the right which leads down to the Steinegger inn near Appiano Monte.
From the restaurant, we follow marker no. 540 to reach San Michele Appiano. A local bus then takes us back to Sant'Antonio di Caldaro (St. Anton bei Kaltern).
