The Fiè Pond has been established by Leonhard baron Colonna of Fiè as a fishpond in the 16th century. Today, however, fishing is no longer permitted and part of the lake is recognized as a valuable biotope. The great location of the pond, at the foot of the Sciliar Massif and the Cima Santer peak, as well as in close vicinity to reknown hiking destinations such as the Tuff Mountain Hut, makes this small lake both in summer and winter a popular excursion destination. The surface of the lake is about one hectare, half of it is designated as biotope.
The Fiè Pond is situated only 12 km above Bolzano, in other words within easy reach from the main town of South Tyrol by car or by public means of transport. In summer you can enjoy the clear mountain air in combination with swimming in the refreshing pond or walking around the lake. In winter, however, you can go ice skating on the frozen lake. The Fiè Pond - "Völser Weiher" in German, "Laghetto di Fiè" in Italian - is one of the only lakes in the surroundings which is cleared for ice skaters in case of snowfall. By the way: At the parking space, there's the information point of the Sciliar-Catinaccio Nature Park which offers interesting information about the flora and fauna around the lake, in the reeds and in the surrounding wetlands.
