Mountain huts are not only great hiking destinations but also bases for high-alpine tours and overnight accommodation
South Tyrol has some very special mountain huts, from South Tyrol's highest refuge, the Rifugio Gino Biasi al Bicchiere at an altitude of 3,195 metres in Val Ridanna to the Maria Hut in the moon-like landscape of Mt. Sass Pordoi, and from the rebuilt Rifugio Petrarca in the heart of the Val Passiria mountains to the world-famous Tre Cime - Locatelli Hut at the Three Peaks of Lavaredo.
Most were built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and today they are important stops for hikers and mountain guides. There are also various alpine pasture huts; some are ancient wooden structures, while others are newly built: They provide a welcoming place for a stop.
