The Monzoccolo, a mountain ridge between Bolzano and Merano, is known for its cairns called "Stoanerne Mandln" and the larch forests that turn colourful in autumn. Between them, a pleasant walking path winds through nature: The Köfele Trail starts in Meltina village and follows trail no. 1 directly from the information office, where we first visit the Fossilia Meltina exhibition.
Afterwards, it is only 15 minutes until we reach the first station: The huge wooden Haflinger horse is ideal for climbing. Once we have let off some steam and taken a few photos for the family album, we continue: Ten minutes later, the tree house with audio station is reached. Then, after another ten minutes, follows the Knottensteig with a rope to pull yourself up over the rocks.
The next and fourth station comes after approximately 20 minutes: It is the wooden giant, whose two legs are metal slides. This station is located near the Meltina Cable Car, which leads up here from the valley: This means you can also combine a cable car ride with the hike and join at station no. 4. Time for a picnic! Afterwards, only one more play station awaits us on our hike today. The spider and the salamander mark the end of the Köfeleweg after another 30 minutes.
Then it is back to the village of Meltina. There is a separate, sixth station, which we are skipping on today's hike to treat ourselves to a snack at an inn instead: The sixth station is located near the neighbouring Frassineto and takes you from the centre on trail no. 2 to the mill wheel, a wonderful destination particularly in summer. Water, forest and building materials attract the children.
