The numerous rustic huts on the Salto High Plateau, called Schupfen, in local dialect, are the scene of a festival in autumn

On the sunny low mountain ridge between Bolzano and Merano, the 3rd Sunday in September is a special day. Between the small Schupfen, the alpine huts on the larch meadows, you can celebrate with culinary delicacies and live music. The individual Schupfen can be hiked in several stages between San Genesio (Jenesien) and Meltina (Mölten), and offer various dishes: Venison goulash and chanterelles, dumplings and Strauben, a sweet delicacy.
The San Genesio Schupfen Festival has become a cult event and takes place at the very time when the larches on the Salto High Plateau begin to turn yellow and orange, and cows and Haflinger horses are still grazing in the pastures. Tip: It is best to visit the festival in lederhosen or dirndl!
