San Genesio Schupfen Festival

The numerous rustic huts on the Salto Plateau, called Schupfen in local dialect, are the scene of the culinary festival in September

On the sunny low mountain ridge between Bolzano and Merano, the third Sunday in September is a special day. It is a wonderful period on the Salto: Soon the larch meadows will turn yellow and orange, and summer will make room for the first days of autumn. Then it's time for the legendary San Genesio Schupfen Festival between the small "Schupfen", the alpine huts on the larch meadows, where you can celebrate with culinary delicacies and live music.

The individual "Schupfen" can be hiked in several stages between the villages of San Genesio Atesino and Meltina, and offer various dishes: venison goulash and chanterelles, dumplings and Strauben with cranberry jam, typical desserts and South Tyrolean Speck. The San Genesio Schupfen Festival has become a cult event - it is best to visit the festival in Lederhosen or Dirndl!
