Every year on the second Sunday in September, the centre of the town of Vipiteno around the famous Tower of the Twelve becomes a dumpling mile: Then a 400-metre long table is set up in the new and old town where the round delicacies can be tasted in all kinds of variations. Also at the central square and on the local mountain, the Monte Cavallo, dumplings are served. Already for a millennium, dumplings have been an important element of the farmer's kitchen in South Tyrol.

Traditional dishes include dumplings with chanterelles, with savoury bacon, or without anything as simple napkin dumplings. Furthermore there are creative variations with wild herbs, with a nougat filling and strawberry dumplings. Are you curious now? The popular Vipiteno Dumpling Festival or Knödelfest Sterzing has been organised for more than two decades by the Vipiteno Val di Vizze Campo di Trens Tourist Association and the participating restaurants, and attracts thousands of visitors every year. Live music and folklore groups provide accompaniment to the culinary delights.
