Once a year the focus in the Martello valley in the Val Venosta is set on a delicious red fruit that grows in this valley.
In South Tyrol the strawberries of the Val Martello are famous all over and every year they are highly coveted and enjoyed with cream or boiled down to jam for the long winter season.
But how do the Val Martello and the strawberries fit together? The Val Martello, a side valley of the Val Venosta, is the highest strawberry-growing area of Europe. For this reason the oncoming harvest is celebrated every year at the end of June at the Trattla recreation grounds with a huge strawberry festival, which in the course of time has become famous beyond borders.
By the way, this festival could be visited in your family holidays. Adults might also want to see the traditional midnight performance, or attend one of the folk music concerts taking place on this occasion. The highlight, however, are still the strawberries!
