A ladies’ parallel slalom combines with stylish Dirndl on the slopes to mark International Women’s Day
It is March 8 when International Women's Day draws attention to women's rights. Yellow mimosas, representing sensitivity and strength, can be seen everywhere on this day - but on the slopes of the Val Gardena-Alpe di Siusi Skiing Area, it is Dirndl that adorn the runs.
Once a work uniform for women in the 19th century, they were later adopted as a trend in the wealthy circles of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. At the Dolomites Dirndl Ski Day, held and celebrated with a smile, part of the proceeds benefits the Gea women's refuge - a contact point against violence in Bolzano. It is a ladies' parallel slalom where all athletes compete in Dirndl.
The competition takes place on the Alpe di Siusi at the Sanon Hut, one of the most famous mountain huts there. Now in its fourth edition, the event begins in the morning with an aperitif and snacks. This is followed by an easy parallel slalom featuring a dice game at the finish area, accompanied by a DJ set. The winners are honoured in the afternoon. Participation is open exclusively to women in teams of two aged between 18 and 99 (for a fee).
Registration: ortisei@valgardena.it. Join in! The importance of traditional costumes is also shown by the annual "Val Gardena dresses to the nines" parade in summer and the Castelrotto Museum of Traditional Costumes, where the traditional outfits can be admired all year round.
