A mountain bike marathon with freeride descents, single track and a summit finish - the Kronplatz King Marathon
The Plan de Corones, the local mountain of Brunico and a popular skiing area in winter, crowns its mountain bike King every year in June. That is when the Kronplatz King Marathon takes place, combining freeride with single track and an uphill ride. However, the name is not entirely accurate, as there is naturally also a Kronplatz Queen. The event is slightly shorter in the Prince Class.
The King Marathon (long distance) starts in the morning in San Vigilio, the starting signal for the Prince Class follows half an hour later. The marathon leads to Ciamaor, to the Sorafurcia Hut and up to Mt. Plan de Corones. Located between these points are several refreshment stations and tech zones, as the route is 64 kilometres long and demands an impressive 3,150 metres of elevation gain from the athletes. The Prince Class (short distance) is slightly shorter at 49 kilometres and 2,150 metres of elevation gain, but also ends at the Plan de Corones summit.
The first participants complete the long distance in just over three hours, and the short distance in around two and a half hours. The prize-giving ceremony follows in the afternoon. It is a point-to-point mountain bike marathon for racers and amateurs featuring the Piz de Plaies freeride descent. Participation with e-mountain bikes (in a separate category) is also permitted.
All FCI and UCI licence holders are eligible to participate, as well as those belonging to associations recognised by CONI - everyone must be able to present a valid sports medical certificate. Information on the route and registration: mtb@kronplatzking.com.
