When shooting stars are visible in the sky, the wine producers of Bolzano pour their best wines in the town centre
In the first half of August, the Perseids are always visible in the sky - this is a recurring meteor shower with a high concentration of shooting stars. This natural phenomenon was recorded in China as early as 36 AD, and long before that, the Egyptians observed the stars, particularly Sirius, to determine the Nile calendar and religious rites. According to legend, the Perseids are the tears of Saint Lawrence, one of the seven deacons under Pope Sixtus II, falling from the sky.
In Bolzano, the Arcades and the town centre transform into a festival venue on the Night of St. Lawrence. From early evening until midnight, the town's wineries present South Tyrolean wine in its great variety, accompanying the delicacies and South Tyrolean products such as Speck, baked goods, and cheese offered at gourmet stalls. Local restaurants offer creative menus.
The event is a summer highlight: in direct contact with the producers, you can learn interesting facts about the cultivation, processing, and production of the wine.
It is organised by the Bolzano Tourist Board in collaboration with the wineries and the Consortium for the Protection of Santa Maddalena, under the patronage of the Municipality. Since 1998, similar events have taken place simultaneously in over 200 cities across Italy on this night. Admission is free, and tasting vouchers are available at the information point on the Piazza del Grano square.
