South Tyrol’s bakeries and pastry shops present their delicious products at the Bressanone Bread and Strudel Market in autumn
It is more than just a market that enchants Bressanone for three days every year in early October: The South Tyrolean Bread and Strudel Market is a festival of daily bread that tells the story of its history, its different varieties and its ingredients. It aims to raise awareness of what lies behind the crispy Schüttelbrot, the rustic "Pusterer Breatl", the hearty bread of the Val Venosta valley, called "Vinschger Paarl", and other regional bread and strudel types.
Even on a walk through Bressanone, you will pass around 10 bakeries that smell wonderful. On this October weekend, the whole town is filled with this scent. In the Cathedral Square, the individual stalls present bread in all possible variations, but also some sweet temptations. These include sweet bread types such as fruit bread and "Zelten"', the original South Tyrolean apple strudel (made from shortcrust, puff or strudel pastry) as well as other typical sweets.
The event is a true family festival with special courses with the master baker for children and adults. The Thanksgiving Mass, the procession of the bakers into the cathedral and the historical trail "From Grain to Bread" are also part of it. Bressanone is also easily accessible by public transport: The bus station is a 10-minute walk from the town centre, and the colourful regional trains also stop in Bressanone (in addition to all IC and EC trains on the Innsbruck-Verona line).
