The Castelrotto Peasant Wedding is considered one of the most magnificent traditional costume displays in South Tyrol
On a cold January day, a peasant wedding is re-enacted in Castelrotto in the Alpe di Siusi area, just as it used to be customary in the past. Back then, weddings were mostly held in winter, as the warm months were reserved for hard work on the farm and in the fields.
Magnificently decorated horse-drawn sleighs start around 2 pm at a farm on the Via Marzinen road, travelling through the deep snowy landscape to Castelrotto. Upon arrival in the village centre, the wedding party presents itself to the spectators, who are meanwhile treated to local delicacies by farmers from the surrounding area. The wedding party, consisting of 17 couples in historical traditional costumes, is well worth seeing; the magnificent garments are all privately owned.
The supporting programme includes music and entertainment with specialities in the village square in the morning, and a guided tour of the Castelrotto Museum of Traditional Costumes in the afternoon. Another costume display takes place in high summer in the Val Gardena valley - the parade is called "Val Gardena dresses to the nines".
