Lake Caldaro and its surroundings as a race course: the starting signal for the Lake Caldaro Triathlon is always fired in May
Every year in May, a touch of the Olympics comes to the south of South Tyrol. This happens when the Lake Caldaro Triathlon (Kalterer See Triathlon) takes place over the Olympic distance of a 1.5 km swim, 40 km cycle and 10 km run. Often referred to as the short distance, this is the official distance at the Olympic Games and is tackled by many amateur and professional athletes, with pros often completing the course in around two hours.
Anyone holding a valid race licence from the country they are representing can take part in this event. The running route - 3 x 3.33 km - is located on the northern shore of the lake, while the cycling route - 3 x 13.35 km - leads athletes around the lake and into the immediate surroundings up to an altitude of 349 metres above sea level. The race starts in San Giuseppe al Lago in Caldaro.
This is a wonderful opportunity for spectators and athletes to explore the scenic area. Various aid stations await along the route. The day before the triathlon, a charity pedalo race takes place at Lake Caldaro in collaboration with "Run for live" to benefit the South Tyrolean association for children with Down's syndrome, "Il Sorriso-das Lächeln".
