Open air theatre “Freilichtspiele Lana”

An in-house production is staged every summer at the famous Freilichtspiele Lana

One of the most successful theatre groups in South Tyrol has been staging an in-house production every summer for over 30 years. Formerly held in the Gaul Canyon, the performances now take place in the Capuchin Garden in Lana di Sopra, situated just below the pedestrian zone, allowing you to experience summer nights and culture in the Merano area.

The theatre troupe consists of new talent, professional actors and amateurs, and creates a deeply impressive experience. It is supported by the Office for German Culture and various sponsors. The performances, always in German language, include plays such as "Alpträumer", film classics like "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (the original 1975 film starred Jack Nicholson) or "The White Horse Inn", and contemporary works such as "Romulus the Great".

In 2023, "Die Piefke-Saga", a stage adaptation of the satirical television comedy of the same name by Felix Mitterer, was performed. This was followed in 2025 by "Verkaufte Heimat", also by Felix Mitterer, a South Tyrolean family saga concerning the Option period. Tickets are highly sought after.
