Hike on the Caredo Farm Trail

The Farm Trail leads from one homestead to the next - an interesting two-hour circular hike on the Monte Ponente

The Monte Ponente in Bressanone is a wooded mountain slope and a district of the town in the Valle Isarco. It features forests, meadows, mountain farms, and rustic taverns that invite visitors to enjoy the traditional Toerggelen in autumn. In these idyllic surroundings lies the Caredo Farm Trail (Gereuther Höfeweg), which offers a glimpse into the lives of local mountain farmers.

At five kilometres long with an ascent of 280 metres, this circular route takes about two hours and returns to the start. Drinking fountains and viewpoints line the path, alongside picnic areas and farm taverns. Most of them are typical mountain farms with cows, pigs, goats, chickens, rabbits.

Our starting point is the newly built car park directly on the SP74 road above the Egarterhof farm. It can be reached from the road running from Bressanone towards Velturno. From there, the path leads us past the slightly more distant Kerschbaumerhof and Zehrehof farms, before winding around a bend past the Feichterhof farm. Here, surrounded by nature in the Valle Isarco, we have already reached the halfway point and begin our return journey.

Following the Strada del Rodella road, we reach the Perlungerhof, Wegscheiderhof, and Stocknerhof. After a wide bend, our hike takes us past the Alte Säge (old sawmill), then the Moarhof and Gruberhof. Every single farmstead along this themed trail has its own story to tell.

Some of these histories stretch back several centuries. Knowing that farmers still have to work these incredibly steep meadows is truly humbling. After a walking time of two hours, we return to our starting point. It is well worth planning at least half a day for this outing, especially in autumn, to enjoy apple juice, new wine, and roasted chestnuts during the traditional Toerggele season.
