Films from Italy and its neighbouring countries are presented every year in April at South Tyrol’s most famous film festival
The Bolzano Film Festival Bozen (BFFB) has set itself the goal of focusing each year on a specific area that has stood out due to the quality of its recent film productions. Priority is given to countries and regions far from the world's main political and cultural centres, and in this context, to works that specifically highlight social, political or linguistic minorities.
The venue is a cinema: the Filmclub in the old town of Bolzano. The history of the film festival dates back to 1987, when the "Bozner Filmtage" were held for the first time. The awards and competitions have increased steadily following 2003 - since 2023, the Bolzano Film Festival Bozen has been breaking new ground with a new direction and a new board. South Tyrolean film locations are highly sought-after, and renowned actors have already been guests at the event.
The festival is divided into various sections: The BFFB competition is dedicated to hybrid forms, "contaminated" cinema, and cinema at geographical, political and formal borders. "BFFB Special" shows films that align with the festival's philosophy but cannot participate in the competition sections for various reasons. It includes productions of great importance for the area.
Four further sections include "RealeNonReale" for non-fiction, "LocalHeroes" for local talents, "Lili - Little Lights" for children and young people, and "Piccole Lingue DOC" for languages and linguistic minorities. Each year, the festival also awards two honorary prizes to individuals who are significant in the world of cinema in Italy, Austria, Germany, Switzerland or Slovenia.
