Gustav Mahler Music Weeks

Summer in Dobbiaco features a diverse cultural programme of orchestral concerts, chamber music and lectures

It was at the beginning of the 20th century that Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) composed his 9th Symphony and the unfinished 10th Symphony during his summer retreat in Dobbiaco. He also wrote "Das Lied von der Erde" here. He loved his small wooden house in the forest near Carbonin Vecchia, the composing hut, which can still be visited on specific days during the summer. Here in the Upper Val Pusteria, he found peace, relaxation and inspiration.

The first Gustav Mahler Music Weeks were held in his honour in 1981. Since 1999, they have taken place at the Grand Hotel cultural centre. Internationally renowned orchestras, ensembles, conductors and young talents dedicated to Mahler's work and era gather every year in these weeks between July and September for this significant cultural event.

Gustav Mahler's music and creative output take centre stage. The special atmosphere of the Grand Hotel in the village of Dobbiaco - easily accessible by public transport - alongside other carefully selected historical venues in the region provides the perfect complement. The 2026 edition features the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, the Beethoven Orchester Bonn, the Korossy Quartet and the young Hungarian pianist Valentin Magyar, among others.

Tickets are available online at kulturzentrum-toblach.eu.
