One of the biggest riding spectacles in South Tyrol takes place every year between late May and early June in the Alpe di Siusi area
Oswald von Wolkenstein, the famous minnesinger, was born in 1367 at Trostburg Castle above Ponte Gardena. A tournament that includes the most beautiful spots in the Alpe di Siusi area has borne his name for over four decades. Even before the opening ceremony in the village square of Siusi allo Sciliar, the teams must qualify two weeks in advance during the ring piercing event at the Kofel hill in Castelrotto. Four competitions then follow on the tournament Sunday.
These are the ring piercing at the Kofel, the "Labyrinth" with the passing of the banner staff in Siusi allo Sciliar, the obstacle gallop at the Fiè Pond and the gate ride on the meadows in front of Presule Castle through eight gate poles with bells. Speed and skill are just as decisive as accuracy and teamwork. Sometimes less than a second separates the winning teams.
And who takes part? Thirty-six South Tyrolean teams are admitted: Each team consists of four people who have reached the age of 16. Three of them must have their registered residence in the same municipality in South Tyrol. Their horses - all breeds are allowed - must be healthy, fit for riding, and turning four years old in the year of the ride.
Incidentally, the team from Castelrotto village won in 2025. They are allowed to keep the new standard, crafted by the Moser metal workshop in collaboration with several businesses from the Val Sarentino, until the next tournament in late May 2026.
