In the old municipal depot in Malles Venosta, several highly interesting objects form a small exhibition known as the ski museum. The collection is called "The History of Skiing in the Upper Val Venosta" and welcomes visitors all year round on request. Museum founder Luis Weger collected well over 500 exhibits and has an enormous amount of knowledge on the subject.
The museum displays old wooden skis with curious fastenings that skiers once used to trudge up the slopes on foot. It also features the skis of the Italian King Umberto II and some newer examples from recent decades. In addition, there are hobnailed boots and early bindings (such as Bilgeri bindings) that go far back in time. The local history of the sport also covers its connection to the military and its early days in Trafoi.
A wall of fame presents the greatest athletes and legends of skiing and cross-country skiing in South Tyrol. While Dominik Paris breaks records today and is one of the most successful downhill skiers in World Cup history, names like Isolde Kostner, Denise Karbon and Gustav Thöni dominated the media in the past. South Tyrol is particularly famous for its "Blue Avalanche" (Valanga Azzurra) of the 1970s, an era when athletes like Gustav Thöni dominated the sport.
And how to reach the ski museum? It is located in the basement of the old municipal depot on a small side street near the civil protection centre and the train station in the centre of Malles. Therefore, it is easily accessible via the Val Venosta Railway. The address is Via Pardelles, 16.
