A fairly simple hike, which might be made slightly more challenging by the snow, starts in Ulfas in the Upper Val Passiria and leads us through a true winter wonderland. It is snowing on this February day, and the silence gifted to us by the snowfall is impressive. We start at the "Kratzegg" car park in Ulfas and immediately see the signpost pointing the way to the mountain hut.
It is trail no. 2A - as the walk is short, we stay on this path. We head north to the forest edge and then continue through the winter woods on a moderate incline. We trudge through the snow, and the occasional snowball finds its mark. After walking through the snow for a while, we reach a bridge. After crossing this small bridge, we keep to the right.
A wide left curve finally leads us, after less than an hour, on a gentle ascent to the Ulfas Mountain Hut (Ulfaser Alm). The enchanting hut sits at 1,601 metres above sea level and is also open in winter: From December to mid-February, it serves excellent regional dishes at lunchtime. Good winter shoes are a must for this walk - the return journey follows the same route.
