MuseumPasseier - Andreas Hofer

The MuseumPasseier can be visited in the Sandhof farm in S. Leonardo in Passiria, Andreas Hofer’s birthplace.

Andreas Hofer, South Tyrolean freedom fighter (1767 - 1810), is the protagonist of this museum in Val Passiria. It is located at the Sandhof farm that is steeped in history. On a surface of 600 sqm, you can discover more about the myth Hofer and the Tyrolean freedom fight of 1809, as well as exhibits of this period of time and a movie of 15 minutes. “Heroes & Hofer”, this is how the permanent exhibition is called. In addition, there are a comprehensive collection of music of the Val Passiria and two more areas called “Heroes & Us” and “Country & People”, in local dialect “Tol und Leit”.

The second area (Heroes & Us), is dedicated to the term hero. What actually is a hero? A celebrity or rather one of the multitude of everyday life heroes? This is where you can stand on the podium and find your own way across the exhibition. The third area (Country & People) is an open-air site that shows a typical farmstead of the Val Passiria, called “Haufenhof” with a multitude of outbuildings. On the open-air site, the buildings have been rebuilt true to the original. What is particularly interesting is a movie that is presented in the barn, informing visitors about the rural life of bygone periods.

Beside the main seat, the MuseumPasseier has few more outposts, that is to say the French cemetery, Giovo Castle and the alp museum Pfistrad. To those who would like to combine a visit to the museum with exercising, we recommend the Andreas Hofer round trail that starts at the tourist office of San Leonardo and takes to the Sandhof farm in about 1.5 hours. Also the Val Passiria cycling trail runs past the museum.
