The Muri Gries Monastery in Bolzano hosts a comprehensive collection of cribs.
The history of the Muri Gries Monastery dates back to the 11th century. For centuries it used to be self-supporting, today Muri Gries is a conventional vine-growing company producing 85% red wines and 15% white wines, maturing in the ancient cellar. The Benedictine convent also bears another treasure: the Romanesque tower of the former Gries Castle, today integrated into the convent, houses a crib collection.
What you can admire are passion cribs, antique and oriental cribs as well as new exemplars. One portrayal even dates back to the mid 18th century. Also 40 figurines of folk arts are exhibited. Obviously this exhibition is particularly popular in Christmas time, when people set up their cribs also at home. For this period the exhibition is open every weekend, during the year it opens its gates only once a month.
In the last years in Advent and Christmas time, the way from the Talvera bridge via Via della Libertà towards the quarter of Gries was decorated with Christmas cribs. This initiative, called “Strasse der Krippen” (Crib Road), shows cribs from South Tyrol, various Italian regions, Tyrol and Poland in the vitirines of more than 100 shops. The “Crib Road” is staged in the frame of the Christmas Market and shows you the way to Piazza Gries, so also the the collection of cribs in the Muri Gries Monastery.
