Show Corridor in the District Heating Plant

The Biomass Educational Trail in the Dobbiaco-San Candido District Heating Plant provide an insight also into this topic.

Dobbiaco (Toblach) is home to the Dobbiaco-San Candido District Heating Plant, which supplies the two municipalities in the Upper Val Pusteria with heat. Its ORC module (Organic Rankine Cycle for optimised electricity production), installed in 2003, was the first in South Tyrol. Only two years later, a show corridor was opened that is unique in Europe: It vividly shows the entire process from biomass - i.e. all organic substances used as energy sources - to electricity generation.

Seeing, listening, feeling and understanding play an important role here. The Show Corridor, which is an ideal excursion for school classes and for anyone interested in this topic and the raw material wood, tells about the forest as an energy store and about district heating, explains what wood chips and an OCR module are, and shows how combustion and filter technology work. In 2021, construction work began on the new district heating station, a hybrid plant for more efficient control of electricity production. Work is scheduled to be completed in October 2022.

It is particularly interesting that the Show Corridor is connected to the nearby Three Peaks Nature Park House, where visitors young and old can learn more about the subject of wood. Behind the Nature Park House is the Dobbiaco Wood Wonder World, an adventure and play world with a tree village in the middle of the forest. And how to reach the Dobbiaco-San Candido District Heating Plant? It is located in the Via Stazione road 8, not far from the Gustav Mahler Cultural Centre, and offers a car park. The train station of Dobbiaco is also located in this road.
