Hike on the Bressanone Archaeological Trail

A themed trail in Bressanone follows ancient Roman paths to historic cult sites and scenic viewpoints

Dating back to the days when Roman chariots travelled through the Valle Isarco, the Bressanone Archaeological Trail (Archeopfad Brixen) begins at the Ponte Aquila bridge in the town of Bressanone. First, we walk through the oldest district of Bressanone, Stufles, to the Guggerhof farm tavern, which is known for its traditional food and wine selection.

In the area between Stufles and Elvas, fruit and wine were already grown in Roman times, while Roman chariots passed through the valley basin - the main route connecting north and south. Thanks to its position on the Brennero axis, the area around Bressanone was a strategic base, and settlement in the region grew stronger with the construction of the Via Claudia Augusta.

Information boards were set up along the theme trail about a decade ago. We pass mystical cup-marked stones and the Roman tower, where we stop: It offers a lovely view over the oldest town in the "land on the Adige" as far as the Colle Pinaz. This hill, also known as Pinatzbühel, was already inhabited during the Bronze Age, and a large hillfort once stood here.

Along the path to Elvas and Kranebitt, we find old wheel ruts alongside replicas of Roman chariots. On our way back, we come across an open-air exhibition that brings this two-hour walk to a close.

The trail also intersects with the Valle Isarco Wine and Apple Trail, another themed route running through Bressanone's natural and cultural landscape up to the Naz-Sciaves high plateau.
