World of Loden Museum

Experience Loden at the interactive World of Loden in Vandoies: from sheep shearing to finished garment

Loden - the robust, hard-wearing wool fabric somewhat reminiscent of felt - is fashionable once again. But its history goes back a long way. As early as the Middle Ages, this durable material was highly valued. The Old High German term "lodo" already referred to "coarse woollen cloth" in the 10th century. Loden owes its eventual rise in the fashion world to Franz Joseph I of Austria in the 19th century, who wore it with enthusiasm.

For a long time, Loden was known in muted colours like olive green, greyish-brown, or reddish-brown. It was mainly used for hunting attire and traditional costumes. But the unique insulating, warming, and weather-resistant properties of the wool fabric have been rediscovered. Today, Loden clothing is presented in contemporary colours and modern designs. At the World of Loden Museum (Lodenwelt Museum), you can experience the entire production process, from sheep shearing and the fulling, combing, and spinning of the wool, right through to the finished garment.

On the ground floor, the "Winter Wonderland" exhibition area awaits. On the first floor, you'll learn everything about Loden production. Alongside historical equipment, garments made in the Oberrauch Zitt Manufactory are also on display and can be purchased in the adjoining shop. Right next door, at the Dairy Adventure World Capriz, everything revolves around goats and cheese.

How to get there: You can reach the museum via the main road. Take the turn-off at Vandoies di Sopra and follow the signs. The Val Pusteria bus route 401 also stops at the museum.
