archeoParc Val Senales

Discover Oetzi’s world: a journey back to the Stone Age at the archeoParc in the Val Senales valley

In the Val Senales, more precisely in Madonna di Senales, a unique destination awaits: the archeoParc. This 5,000 sqm open-air archaeological and activity museum lets you actively experience, not just observe, Oetzi the Iceman's world. Reconstructed houses, surrounded by plants that thrived over 5,000 years ago, transport you back to Oetzi's time.

Overlooking the Giogo di Tisa pass on the Similaun, where the ice mummy was discovered in 1991, you'll feel a tangible connection to history. You can explore the museum in two ways: Course 1 offers a brief glimpse into Oetzi's daily life in about an hour, encompassing indoor exhibitions, houses of the Alpine Valleys with demonstration area, and a nature path. Alternatively, delve deeper with courses 1, 2, and 3, immersing yourself for three to four hours.

This experience includes everything in course 1, plus the houses of the North Alpine Foreland and of the Po Plain, the workshop area, the canoe stop and the archery area. Conclude your day in the bookshop or the cafeteria. Late June 2025 has seen the addition of the Campus Transhumance. This new site, with its museum and cultural centre, is dedicated to the theme of transhumance - the sheep drive - during which humans and animals cover here up to 44 kilometres over two days. For now it is part of the archeoParc Val Senales and can be visited with the same ticket.

The route partly leads across snowfields and rocky gullies until they reach the alpine pastures in the Austrian Oetztal. The new area is immediately adjacent to the open-air section of the archeoParc. To see Oetzi himself, visit the ice mummy in a refrigerated chamber at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano's old town, approximately 60 kilometres away. How to get to the archeoParc: It is located in Madonna di Senales in the Merano area, and offers on-site parking. The 261 bus route connects Naturno near Merano with Madonna di Senales.
