Hike to the Barbiano Waterfall

Family hiking tour from Barbiano to the upper waterfall of Barbiano, which cascades from Mount Corno del Renon

Starting at the leaning church tower of Barbiano, we follow the signpost "Wasserfallweg" (Waterfall Path) and than trail no. 6A towards south, hiking upwards through the upper village and across the meadows above it. The trail offers great views of the opposite side of the Valle Isarco: We see the village of Laion and the Val Gardena, the hamlet Tagusa, Trostburg Castle and Mt. Sciliar.

Soon we reach the signpost leading to the lower waterfall ("Unterer Wasserfall"). However, since we want to hike to the upper waterfall, we continue to follow trail no. 6A, which starts getting steeper and snakes upwards through meadows and forests. At an altitude of about 1,100 m a.s.l. we reach trail no. 6, which we follow towards south. This last section is a little more difficult than the rest of the tour, but still very well maintained and even secured with ropes, which does not seem to be really necessary. After about one hour we reach the impressive upper waterfall.

From a small wooden bridge, we watch the water rushing down. On our way back we decide to hike to the lower waterfall, which is connected to the upper waterfall by a hiking trail. However, because of some maintainance works, this trail is closed at the moment (June 2011). Therefore, we have to hike the same way back. Alternatively, one could hike to Tre Chiese (Dreikirchen) on trail no. 6 and back to the centre of Barbiano (Barbian) on the Keep Fit Trail.
