Hike to the Barbiano Waterfall

A family hike from Barbiano to the upper Barbiano Waterfall, which plunges down in eight cascades

Starting from the famous leaning church tower in Barbiano, we follow the "Wasserfallweg" (waterfall trail) signs and then path no. 6A to reach this natural feature. We ascend slowly through the upper village and past the meadows. The path provides a good view along the way.

Laion, the Val Gardena valley, Tagusa, Trostburg Castle and the mighty Sciliar lie on the other side of the Valle Isarco. A signpost points towards the lower waterfall, but we stay on path no. 6A because we want to go to the upper Barbiano Waterfall. The route now becomes steeper. At around 1,100 metres above sea level, we join path no. 6 and follow it further south.

"Nur für Trittsichere" resp. "Solo per escursionisti dal passo sicuro" (only for sure-footed hikers), a sign reads. The path was recently upgraded and secured with ropes, so we feel safe. After just over an hour, we reach the striking waterfall. The rushing water provides a pleasant coolness, and the smooth rock beneath the small wooden bridge is a distinct feature of this location.

The lower waterfall connects to the upper one via a footbridge, but this structure is currently undergoing renovation. Therefore, we walk back along the same path and arrive back in Barbiano after our two-hour tour. Anyone wishing to walk a little further can stroll along path no. 6 to the spring sanctuary of Tre Chiese and return to Barbiano via the fitness trail.
