Show Corridor in the District Heating Plant

Renewable energy production is presented at the Dobbiaco-San Candido District Heating Plant in the Val Pusteria

Located in the village centre of Dobbiaco, the Dobbiaco-San Candido District Heating Plant supplies heat to both municipalities in the Val Pusteria valley. The ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle) system for optimised electricity production, installed in 2003, was the first of its kind in South Tyrol. Just two years later, a unique educational tour opened, the only one of its kind in Europe. It illustrates the entire process of energy generation from biomass - organic matter used as fuel.

Seeing, hearing, touching, and understanding are central to the experience. The tour is ideal for school groups and anyone interested in renewable energy and wood as a resource. You'll learn fascinating facts about the forest as an energy store, district heating, wood chips, ORC modules, combustion processes, and filter technologies. A new heating plant was built a few years ago: a hybrid system for even more efficient electricity generation.

A particularly exciting feature: The tour is linked to the nearby Three Peaks Visitor Centre. Here, visitors of all ages can discover many fascinating exhibits about wood. Directly behind the visitor centre, you'll find the freely accessible Biomass Educational Trail and the Dobbiaco Wood Wonder World - an adventure playground with a treetop village nestled in the heart of the forest.

How to get there: The district heating plant is easily accessible by car (parking available) or train. The address is Via Stazione road no. 8, near the Gustav Mahler Cultural Centre.
